Vancouver Aquarium
Vancouver Aquarium was one of the most popular scenic spots in Vancouver's Stanley Park by the number of its annual visitor. Every year it received over 100 million visits, many from repeat visitors. In addition, it was the largest aquarium in Canada, as well as one of the five largest aquariums in North America. At the entrance to the Aquarium, there was a gigantic bronze statue of the killer whale, because Bjossa and Finna, two killer whales, were the favorites in the Aquarium. Everyday the Aquarium would stage a show featuring dolphins and whales, and the latter's excellent performance was the key reason for the Aquarium's popularity.
The Vancouver Aquarium was divided into six exhibition districts, namely Max Bell Marine Center, Arctic Canada, Sandwell North Pacific Gallery, Graham Amazon Gallery, H.R. MacMillan Tropical Gallery and Rufe Gbbs Hall.
The Max Bell Marine Center had an enormous glass window, through which the visitors could see otters playing and jumping. Arctic Canada featured animals from the Canadian Arctic. In Arctic Canada, visitors could meet Beluga Whales face to face through a glass window. Other animals in the Arctic, like sea elephants and seals, were also available.
The Sandwell North Pacific Gallery and the Rufe Gbbs Hall housed aquatic animals from Canada's coastal waters, such as giant octopuses, salmons, seaweeds, as well as creatures from fresh water areas in the Alps. When one entered the Graham Amazon Gallery, one would feel a burning heat. The Gallery's manmade storms and scenes of semi-tropical gardens made you feel you were in a jungle world. The main attraction was the tropical rainforest vegetations along the pavement. From time to time, little cute monkeys, on top of trees, would greet visitors. The Gallery also housed eels, boas, lizards, fingerlings from South America and other tropical rainforest plants. If you had a desire to view sharks, turtles, and corals, then you should not miss the H.R. MacMillan Tropical Gallery.
After visiting the Vancouver Aquarium, you could go to souvenir shops at the entrance to buy dolls, clothes, and postcards. In summers, a series of seasonal activities would take place in the Aquarium. Those who wanted to enjoy a peaceful time in the Aquarium were well advised not to come here during busy hours, for in the morning large parties of student groups would throng the place.
