Victoria
Victoria is not only the capital city of British Columbia but also a harbor and a navy base. It has been lovingly referred to as "The Pearl of Canada".
Victoria is located at the most southern end of Vancouver Island, 130 kilometers from Seattle. It is famous for its distinctive English style urban vistas, the sunshine, the tranquil sea and blooming gardens.
This city faces the strait of Juan de Fuca. In 1843, the first structure, a fur exchange station, was built in Victoria. In 1871, Victoria became the capital of British Columbia because of the easy access of this island from the PacificOcean and the mainland.
In winter, the average temperature of Victoria is about 7 degree Celsius. From the west, Victoria is caressed by warm currents from the Pacific Ocean while from the north, it is protected by the Rocky Mountains which shut out cold currents. As a result, Victoria
enjoys a pleasant climate year round. In such a pleasant climate, one can do all kinds of outdoor activities, like mountaineering, cycling and playing golf. The relation between the Chinese and Victoria started way back in the 1860's during the era of the "gold rush". At that time, western merchant ships carrying furs usually sailed to and fro between Macao and Victoria and they hired many Chinese sailors. In 1860, there were about seven to eight thousand Chinese shipped to Vancouver to help prospect gold. Later, an additional twenty thousand Chinese came willy-nilly Canada to do the hard labor for projects like building the Canadian Pacific Ocean railway. These early Chinese workers began to settle in Victoria and build a small Chinatown.
Boulevards in Victoria are packed with numerous Sakura Trees imported from Japan. These trees were seeded as early as 1930. Victoria today has turned into a fairyland with lush trees and pretty flowers. Many tourists are attracted to this garden city of traditional English style.
Victoria also features a variety of tourist itineraries. One can enjoy an afternoon tea in Butchart Gardens or in The Empress Hotel, or make a trip to Tifino to appreciate the mighty whales. All these are no doubt the best way for a visitor to enjoy and appreciate Victoria, the most ancient city on the West Coast.
An introduction to the scenic spots of Victoria.
