Oklahoma Native Culture

Oklahoma is home to more than 67 tribes, including Cherokee, Choctaw, Chickasaw, Creek, Seminole, Osage, Cheyenne, Sac and Fox, Delaware, Apache and Pawnee. Such famous Indians as Sequoyah, Black Bear, Jim Thorpe and Maria Tallchief contributed to Oklahoma's development.
To get a feel for Native American history in Oklahoma City, you can visit such diverse attractions as the Red Earth Indian Center, the Oklahoma State museum of History, the Oklahoma State Capitol, the National Cowboy hall of Fame, and Tribal Flag Plaza. Or you can attend the Red Earth Festival or the many powwows held throughout the area.

The Red Earth Festival is the largest Native American cultural and arts exposition in the world. More than 2,000 of the finest Native American artists, dancers and singers from more than 100 tribes across North America can be seen each June at the Myriad Convention Center in downtown Oklahoma City. Call 405-427-5228. Read a press release on Red Earth 2000.

The Red Earth Indian Center, housed in the Omniplex Museum Center, features Native American dance regalia, art, the Deupree Cradleboard Collection, and "Dwellings of the Earth," an exhibit of to-scale homes of American Indians from early history. Call 405-427-5228.

The Oklahoma State Museum of History houses one of the best bookstores in the state for books and maps on Oklahoma and Oklahoma City history. This wonderful museum highlights Oklahoma's multi-cultural heritage, their early settlement, agricultural and military history, and of course, Native American history. Check out the bison hide teepee and life-size murals by the Kiowa Five. The museum contains the largest photographic reference section in the state, as well as an extensive library. The photo library is the largest in Oklahoma, and contains thousands of historic Native American photographs. Call 405-522-5244.

While in the Capitol Complex, be sure to visit the capitol building itself. Inside the building are magnificent murals by Oklahoma artist Charles Banks Wilson. The murals dominate the capitol building rotunda and several have Native American themes.

To the north of the building is the Tribal Flag Plaza, which displays all the tribal flags of Oklahoma. On the south side of the capitol is a monumental sculpture "As Long as the Waters Flow," by Native American sculptor Allan Houser.

A quick drive ten minutes to the north is the National Cowboy Hall of Fame. Dominating the interior are several large sculptures, the most famous of which is james Earle Fraser's 18-foot-tall "End of the Trail." While focusing on the rugged individualism and romantic spirit of the frontier, Native American history and culture is woven throughout the museum and its vast art collection. The museum covers 220,000 square feet, and will be opening several new art and history galleries in the summer of 1999.

Take a step back in history with guided tours of seven Indian villages: Wichita, Caddo, Apache, Kiowa, Pawnee, Navajo and Pueblo. Just 65 miles southwest of Oklahoma City in Anadarko, Indian City USA is an authentic restoration of American Indian dwellings and is located just outside the city in the Tonkawa Hills. Guided tours are available and powwows are held regularly. Call 800-433-5661. Also in Anadarko is the Southern Plains Indian Museum and the Hall of Fame for Famous American Indians, both located on Highway 62. Call 405-247-5555.
