French Quarter
  St Louis Cathedral
The French Quarter is the heart of New Orleans, one of the most popular tourist destinations in the universe. This 10 block square is a mosaic of colors, sounds, tastes, smells and feelings like no other place in the world. Nestled in the Mississippi River's crescent, the Quarter is a blend of old and new traditions, cultures and customs.
The French Quarter, or Vieux Carré, which literally means "old square." Established in 1718 by the French as a military outpost to protect their interests and provide a port for commerce, the mile-square Vieux Carré spent the first half-century of its existence as a decidedly French settlement.
The Quarter has many different facets to explore, and Jackson Square is an excellent place to start, long regarded as the very heart of the city. The square was named after Andrew Jackson, the hero of the Battle of New Orleans, 1815, and the massive statue of Jackson on horseback forms the centerpiece of the square. Mimes, portrait artists and street-musicians all ply their trades in Jackson Square, and many are very talented. Jackson Square is surrounded by some of city's most impressive buildings. The imposing St Louis Cathedral, built in 1851, is America's oldest active Roman catholic church. The Cabildo and the Presbytere are classic Spanish colonial structures dating from 1795 that flank the cathedral and which now form part of the Louisiana State Museum. The Pontalba Apartments are tow sets of three-story row houses built in 1849 and 1851 on opposite sides of square, and represent some of the oldest apartment buildings in the US.
Bourbon Street, the best known thoroughfare, is a tawdry assemblage of strip clubs, bars and souvenir shops; even so, some excellent musicians perform there nightly, and it is also the location of some fine restaurants. Royal Street is world-renowned for its connoisseur-class antique shops.
"Moonwalk" offers a panoramic view of the Mississippi River and its dramatic curve around Algiers point on the opposite shore. The promenade along the river leads on to the" Aquarium of the Americas", one of the city's newer attractions.
