Nature of the New Orleans

New Orleans lies in the southeastern corner of Louisiana, with the state of Mississippi 30 miles (48km) to the northeast. With a population of 1.5 million, the metropolitan area encompasses six parishes-the Louisiana term for the local government units known as counties in other American states. These are Orleans parish (the most populous and home to the city proper), Jefferson, St. Bernard, Plaquemines, St. Tammany and St. Charles. Adjacent to the city, Jefferson parish was the first to experience the suburban sprawl, which has now spread to St. Tammany, once a haven for quiet rural living.

Numerous bodies of water divide metropolitan New Orleans, which is traversed by a network of bridges, causeways, tunnels and ferryboats. There抯 a popular misconception that New Orleans literally occupies the mouth of the Mississippi, where that mighty river empties into the Gulf of Mexico. The city is actually situated northwest of the mouth, some 90 miles (145km) upstream, along a crescent shaped stretch of river that accounts for one of New Orleans best known nicknames.

The Mississippi essentially flows south, and the "Crescent City" is technically located on its east bank. But the river抯 eastern flowing curve at New Orleans makes it the city抯 southern border, while "Lake Pontchartrain" forms the boundary to the north. Because of this peculiar bend, those New Orleans neighborhoods on the river抯 West Bank are actually located due east of the city抯 center. Such confusion explains why the four points of the compass are useless for determining directions in New Orleans, and thus are never used. The coordinates instead are uptown, downtown, river and lake.
