The Queen of the South

New Orleans is possessed by the essence of the world from which it was hewn, the bayous and swamplands of the Deep South. The air hangs thick with warmth and moisture, its scent seeps into your very skin. In daylight, it teems with colors, motion and life. At night, it glows with moonlight and becomes a world of mists, shadows and seductive sounds that draw you toward its beautiful and sometimes dangerous heart. Always there is more than meets the eye, more mysteries beyond the scope of the human eye. When you live here, you don’t inhabit New Orleans. It inhabits you.

This city defies definition yet has much to describe. New Orleans is less place to live than a way of life. Living here is elemental and the primary elements number four: food, music, booze and coffee. Order of importance is assigned by the individual. The connection is they all contribute to the fulfillment of the city’s most important tradition; gathering people together. Thousands come to parade and party for Mardi Gras. The world second-lines a path to our door for Jazzfest. If you miss the biggies there’s the French Quarter Fest in April, Swamp Fest in October and celebrations in the name of everything from crawfish to strawberries throughout the year.

Whether it’s oysters at Felix’s, jazz at the Funky Butt, Abita draft’s at Molly’s or a steaming mug at Café Du Monde, Orleanians love to get together. The beauty is in the availability. The aforementioned pleasures await any day, at any hour. Do it all. Tomorrow, do it again, at different places in a different order.

The arts strike your fancy? Browse the galleries and museums of Royal Street. Paintings and portraits come to life around the lush garden of Jackson Square. Magnificent St. Louis Cathedral stands silent guard over artists often more interesting than their art. A stroll through City Park reveals the New Orleans Museum of Art. You’ll find it all, from the antique to the avant-garde, from the eclectic to the esoteric to the erotic.

Visit our neighborhoods and discover the same qualities, blended in the people who call this city home. Explore the French Quarter, where anything you desire is a short walk away. Dare the Fauborg Marigny, where the wild run the streets at night. Walk the Warehouse District where young professionals and old artists mingle in a varied array of bars and clubs. Cruise the CBD where the Big Easy does its big business amidst some of the finest hotels in the world. Haunt the Garden District, where history and weigh the air beneath giant oaks and the eaves of antebellum mansions.

Don’t forget the parks. Visit the Fly and laze in the sunshine beside the rolling Mississippi. City Park features paddleboats, horseback riding, golf and a host of other activities. A walk through Audubon Park takes you to the Audubon Zoo. Catch the ferry from the zoo to the Aquarium of the Americas.

You don’t have to be a riverboat captain to participate in the rich trade culture. You can shop beside the river in the busy and colorful Riverwalk Mall. Further downstream, where St. Charles Avenue bends with the river, sits the Riverbend, chock full of small stores and restaurants offering everything from Anne Rice autographs to take-out sushi . If you prefer to shop while you stroll everything under the sun is available for your perusal on Magazine Street. Antique and consignment shops abound. Browse yourself silly and then catch your breath at one of the many coffee shops and restaurants. Royal Street in the French Quarter caters to the more well-heeled bargain hunter, exhibiting everything from diamond rings to Victorian furnishings. Decatur Street’s French Market, shopping and haggling in the tented, outdoor bazaar tradition, bustles daily as local merchants hawk everything from tie-dye T-shirts to alligator sausage on a stick.

Now that you’ve worked up a hearty appetite touring the city, don’t forget to make dinner plans for one of the Crescent City’s countless eateries. New Orleanians are experts are staying busy without ever hurrying and they know how to refuel. From the world famous Commander’s Palace to neighborhood favorite Jacques-Imo’s, New Orleans caters to every taste. Indulge in the oft-imitated but never duplicated Cajun/Creole cuisine. Recharge on spicy jambalaya, swim in hearty bowls of gumbo, pour Tabasco on the world’s best oysters and refine the art of pinching the tail and sucking the head!

Live music is not a luxury but an essential, a lifeblood, in New Orleans and the night time is the right time to discover why New Orleans is heralded as the birthplace of American music. It’s all here. Funk, reggae, brass, blues, zydeco, gospel, jazz and rock n’ roll. Talented, creative and energetic artists mix and match musical styles to create an intoxicating cocktail of aural delight. From the bright lights of Bourbon street to the dim dance floors of the Uptown clubs it’s everything all the time. Strong drink flows like the Mississippi. Enthusiastic crowds turn out and stay out until the wee hours whether paying homage to local legend Ellis Marsalis or checking out local upstarts All That. You may see the sunrise as you make your way home.

When the morning (or the afternoon) comes and you rise from deep slumber the enticing aroma of fresh coffee and chicory beckons and hot beignets await beneath a pile of powdered sugar. Unfold the newspaper or bend back the guidebook to conversation and chess in one of the city’s countless, charming coffee shops. As you ease into the day, the river rolls on and the city rises to life, its multitude of treasures and mysteries awaiting you again. Welcome to New Orleans, the only city in the world that looks forward to the first Hurricane of the day.
