Ethnicity and Customs

Like many other places in the States, Hartford has a population of diverse demographic background, as demonstrated in a variety of customs with distinct ethnic flavors.

Hartford has a population of approximately 121,578 (2000 Census preliminary estimate). In this population, approximately 38% is Black (mostly African-American with a small, but significant population of West Indian Americans); 39% Hispanic/Latino (mostly Puerto Rican American with a small population of Cuban and other Latin Americans); 22% White (mostly of western European heritage). There is also a small population (1%) of Asian, American Indians, and Pacific islanders. (1998 Claritas Study; 2000 census not finalized at this time).

Festivals and Parades: There are many festivals and parades held in the city annually. Some of the most notable are: the African-American Parade and Festival (end of September); the Fourth of July Riverfest; the Jazz Festival (mid-late July); Mark Twain Days (Labor Day Weekend); the Puerto Rican Day Parade and Festival; St. Patrick's Day Parade; Columbus Day Parade; the Italian Festa (Columbus Day weekend); the Greek Festival (end of June); the West Indian Parade and Festival (week long festival in August); the Thomas Hooker Day Parade (early October); the Festival of Lights (day after Thanksgiving thru New Year's); and First Night (New Year's Eve).
