STRENGTHENING GREATER BOSTON'S ECONOMY: A RECORD OF ACHIEVEMENT
South Boston Waterfront Plan Approved
A zoning plan that will create a world-class neighborhood on the South Boston Waterfront has been approved by state regulators. The Chamber played a major role in shaping and securing approval of the Boston Municipal Harbor Plan, which will enable the construction of new hotel, residential, and office space along the water, and provide a major boost to another Chamber priority, Boston's new convention center.
Chamber-filed Job Training Bill Enacted
A new Massachusetts job training incentive is in place because of Chamber-sponsored legislation. The incentive provides matching funds for job training programs developed jointly by community colleges and area businesses. The incentive will produce new training programs, raise workers skills, and strengthen ties between businesses and community colleges.
Federal Research Funding Increases Secured
Federal research funding, a cornerstone of our region's economy, has increased dramatically over the past two years. The Chamber-organized National Business Coalition for Federal Research helped to secure those increases by working with our region's universities, and with White House and Congressional leaders. Double-digit increases have been won for key accounts, including the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, and Defense Department basic research.
Chamber-Sponsored Waterfront Development Reforms Adopted
A Chamber-initiated reform process has dramatically reduced the time it takes the state to review waterfront development projects. The new process provides quicker decisions, while still preserving high standards that protect the integrity of harbors and shores. These reforms are the third set of change that the Chamber has secured to establish a clear timetable for development project reviews.
China Trade Agreement Becomes Law
In the fall of 2000, Congress and the President reached agreement on a Permanent Normal Trade Relations bill for China, a top Chamber priority. The Chamber led the business community's efforts, resulting in a major victory of vital importance to the economic future of our region. The bill will reduce trade barriers for our region's key industries, including financial services, telecommunications, and technology.
Chamber-Supported Hiring Reforms Included in New Boston Teachers Contract
Reforms that significantly improve the teacher hiring process are now included in the new Boston teachers contract. The Chamber worked for these reforms as a lead member of Boston United for Children, a new coalition of community and business groups working for structural reforms in the Boston Public Schools.
