Area Information on Albuquerque Neighborhoods 1 - Sandia Heights & North Albuquerque Acres: Situated at the north and east boundaries of the city at the foot of the Sandia mountains, these communities have in common great views and many larger lots. Sandia Heights homes are almost all southwest style. Homes in North Albuquerque Acres have been built in a variety of styles. New homes are still being developed in these areas including "High Desert", at the south boundary of Sandia Heights. 2 - East Albuquerque: Ranging from Interstate 25 eastward to the foothills of the Sandia mountains, this area is comprised of a variety of neighborhoods. The oldest section, around the University of NM, includes Nob Hill and Ridgecrest, with many charming, older homes near interesting boutiques and cafes along Central Avenue. Further to the east, a number of mature neighborhoods surround the NM State fairgrounds and the financial, entertainment and shopping center known as "Uptown". The easternmost section bordering the mountains is known for its views and modern home styles. Included in this area are two separate golf course/country club neighborhoods, "Tanoan", and "Four Hills". Most homes in East Albuquerque are an easy commute to Kirtland AFB, Sandia Laboratories and the city's main business centers, hospitals and airport. 3 - The Valley: The oldest neighborhoods in Albuquerque, dating back to the original Spanish settlements, extend both to the north and south of historic Old Town and the "Downtown" business district. Both the North Valley and the South Valley areas have a distinctly rural feeling, with tall trees, gardens, and ranchos. Homes come in all ages and prices from small bungalows to large estates and many custom adobe houses. The city zoo, biological park, museums, and convention center are just a few of the tourist attractions in this area. 4 - West Albuquerque: The west side of the city is comprised of three major neighborhoods. Closest to I-40, is Ladera, with a centrally located golf course. Further north is Taylor Ranch, with access to east Albuquerque via the city's newest bridge on Montano Road. Paradise Hills, which extends to the northern city limits, boasts a golf course and a hospital, and is adjacent to the city's newest shopping center, Cottonwood Mall. Views across the valley to the Sandia mountains can be spectacular from many parts of the west side. Housing developments are continuing in all three areas and home prices are significantly lower compared to East Albuquerque. 5 - Other Communities in the Metro Area: Just north of the Albuquerque city limits are the city of Rio Rancho, with some of the best housing values in the area, and the historic rural village of Corrales, with many newer homes on one to two acre lots. Another popular location for large lots in a rural setting is around the village of Placitas, about thirty minutes north of Albuquerque. South of the city, along I-40, the towns of Los Lunas and Belen have been growing "bedroom " communities for the Metro area. For those who don't mind the winters at higher altitudes, the East Mountain area from Tijeras and Cedar Crest east to Edgewood offer tall pines and panoramic views.
