Albuquerque Jumps to 3rd Among Top 50 Cities for Business Relocation & Expansion

February 5, 2001- Seventy-five of the nation's premier site location consultants to business and industry ranked Albuquerque 3rd among "America's 50 Hottest Cities for Business Relocation and Expansion," up from #8 last year and #13 the year before, which was the first year of the survey. The results of the survey were published in the January issue of Expansion Management magazine.
Site selection consultants advise business and industry, helping them to select cities for expansion or relocation plans. The consultants were asked to list their top choices of cities for their clients, taking into consideration such things as the business climate, work force quality, operating costs, incentive programs, worker training programs and the ease of working with local economic development officials.

Atlanta and Phoenix were ranked first and second, respectively. The other cities ranked in the top ten were Albuquerque (3rd), Jacksonville, Fl. (4th), Dallas (5th), Nashville (6th), Portland (7th), Austin-San Marcos (8th), Indianapolis (9th), and Colorado Springs (10th).

Albuquerque Economic Development Chairman Bob Murphy said "we’re pleased that the leading professional site selection consultants have such confidence in this city and in AED. This ranking confirms that AED and its partners throughout the metropolitan area deliver quality service and a successful location to consultants and their clients. It also tells us that we’re effectively delivering our message about the strengths of this market."

"We’re working to capitalize on the opportunities presented by these relationships and this ranking," Murphy said. "We need to strengthen and diversify our economy by growing the private sector, and the companies we bring will create meaningful jobs for our citizens."

Albuquerque Mayor Jim Baca said, "our commitment is to do all we can to assist with the recruitment of quality companies to our city. It’s satisfying to see that the professional site selecting community recognizes Albuquerque’s progress."

"Our focus on building relationships with site selection consultants is paying dividends. We’re gaining greater recognition, seeing many new opportunities and competing for better projects. We will continue doing everything we can to provide exceptional service to site selection consultants and their clients," said AED President Gary Tonjes.

Expansion Management Associate Editor Rachael Hedgcoth described the importance of the results. "While we’ve always said this survey is not science, it does give an idea of how a city is perceived by those who seek out good business locations for a living. And perception counts for a lot in this business."

AED leads the Albuquerque metro area’s business recruitment efforts. AED's most recent success was the recruitment of Gap Inc., which will open its new offices by fall, 2001, creating 300 jobs before the end of the year. The non-profit organization’s biggest success last year was the recruitment of Eclipse Aviation. Eclipse has projected the creation of 2000 new jobs within seven years, and expects to invest $320 million into its new headquarters and manufacturing plant.

Founded in 1960, AED is a private, non-profit membership-based organization whose mission is "the vigorous recruitment of new jobs for the metropolitan area."

Expansion Management magazine has a circulation of about 45,000, and is distributed monthly to industry executives, site selection consultants and the economic development professional community.
